Provision an Organization for a real company or team — custom name and global alias.
Every account receives a Personal organization at sign-up. Personal is a limited organization type (single org_owner, fixed alias, cannot be deleted). See Personal Organization.
Use this flow to create an Organization — a workspace that represents a real company, division, or customer boundary, not an individual account sandbox.
What an Organization is for
| Examples | Why not Personal? |
|---|---|
Acme Corp — your employer or startup | Needs branded alias, billing, and possibly multiple org owners |
Platform Engineering — an internal division | Shared governance; co-leads both need org_owner |
Customer — Northwind — a client engagement | Deletable when the contract ends; isolated from your Personal drafts |
Organizations are cloud-only. They are distinct from the Local workspace row (filesystem projects on your machine).
1. Open the organizations list
Open the organizations list:
| Entry point | Action |
|---|---|
| Workspace menu | Organizations |
The page lists each membership with Name, Alias, Members, Projects, and Plan. Click a row to open that org’s Projects tab.
2. Start New Organization
Click New Organization in the page header (or in the empty state when you have no Organizations yet).
Free plan limit
On the Free plan you can own only one Organization at a time (Personal does not count). If the button is disabled, delete an Organization you own or upgrade its plan before creating another.
Any signed-in user may open the dialog when under the limit.
3. Complete the form
The New Organization dialog has two fields:
| Field | Required | Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Yes | Up to 100 characters. Use the real org name (Acme Corp, Data Platform). |
| Alias | Yes | 1–20 characters: lowercase Latin letters, digits, -, _, .. Globally unique across all IOModel Organizations. |
Studio suggests an alias from the name. Edit Alias before Create if you need a shorter or branded key.
Reserved aliases (personal, local) are rejected.
4. Create and open
Click Create. On success:
- You become
org_ownerof the new Organization - The org starts on the Free plan
- Studio opens the new organization’s Projects tab
From there, create a project, invite members (including additional org_owner users if needed), or open Organization Settings.
What you get
| Item | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Role | org_owner for the creating user |
| Co-ownership | Additional org_owner members can be invited on Members |
| Plan | Free until upgraded via Plans |
| Structure | Empty — add folders and projects |
| Lifecycle | Can be deleted when empty of other members |
Invited users join through Members → invite; they do not use this create flow.
Next: Organization Settings.
